Why do you want to study English?

Why do you want to study English?

I always ask the questions when I meet a student, someone who wants to start learning English or improve their English.

I ask the question for both me and a student. For me as I want to know what method I should use to teach, how fast, what’s their approach to learning and for a student, and that’s more important, to make them realize why they come to me.

It often happens that a student hears the question for the first time and for the first time they have to answer it. Aloud. They hear their answer and it is probably the first time they become aware of importance of the answer.

The answer is crucial because it conveys information about expecting results of student’s efforts. What, how and when do they expect the results?

Read some example replies of my students:

  • I want to change my job.
  • I want to travel.
  • I want to join my family who’s now living abroad.
  • I don’t know exactly why. I want to do it for myself, to feel better as I know that English is a universal language of communication globally nowadays.
  • Maybe I’ll need it in the future. It’s very important these days.

And why do YOU want to study English? Write down your own answer.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

And then also think about:

  1. What kind of a result do I want achieve? …………………………………….
  2. How do I want to achieve it? ………………………………………….
  3. When do I want to achieve it? ………………………………………..

All your answers are good because they’re yours.  So don’t worry if your answer is :”I don’t know.” Perhaps it’ll come later. Still I want you to be aware of the fact that you start improving your English for a reason. Even though you’re not aware of it now.
